About Us
Having met each other while i was a bus driver in Wakefield, We got married in 1998 and settled down in a 2 bed town house in Wakefield. In 1999 we both joined Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) where we were catering crew onboard the trains.
We both got promotions in the company my wife got promoted to the travel centre at Wakefield Westgate station and I went as a train guard at Leeds. After a year in this job I got promoted again to a trainee Train Driver based a Doncaster, While doing my years training course we moved again to a 4 bed detached house in Kinsley, Pontefract.
We were very settled in this house but in 2006 we found out that my wifes job was not safe, so we set up our own little company called THE BUFFER STOP SHOP in the hope by the time if redundancies came we would be comfortable with the the business and the income. thankfully this has not happened yet. With our little business expanding with doing shows and trading on the internet our house was starting to get full, towards the end it was taking 3 bedrooms, dinning room, bottom of stairs and a trailer full.
With our little enterprize we print onto mugs and the chap who bought the Dent Station building asked us to do some mugs for him to give away to people that stopped at the station as he had done it up as holiday accomodation. My wife fell in love with the idea of living in an old station, There was my green light as I had always loved to live in an old railway building and I knew were there was one.
With been a train driver at Doncaster I have driven passed Howden Station countless time and had noticed the for sale boards up but did not take much notice, we even had the details pinned up on our notice board. So we arranged to call round at the house when we came back from a traction engine ralley at Pickering, My wife fell in love with it straight away ( Never seen her so positive about something) So we arranged a veiwing and the rest you can say is history.
We agreed a price and were due to move in at the end of November but problems with the tprevious owners delayed this to the end of January 2008.
I am a keen railway enthusiast and my wife takes an interest, Northern Rail who lease the station car park and platforms from Network Rail run a station adoption scheme, where local people look after the station reporting faults and keeping the station tidy, So been on the door step we are the Station adopters for Howden Staion. Our intention with the House is to return it to it's 1960's glory with old poster boards and the original colour scheme using the original British Standard colour codes for the paint.
We hope when we apply for approval If it is granted we want to open a little sandwich shop for the morning trains till 1pm and have a shop for our little business for personalised products.
We would like to thank all the people in the area that have made us feel welcome and all the people that have helped us so far.
